With the advent of mass manufacturing, something interesting happened. Rather than people going about their business in the way they thought was best, work got standardized and described. The most illustrative example is of course the moving assembly line invented by Henry T. Ford, but the principle applies to many tasks and professions. Anyone from call center agents following a script to accountants checking the books of a company and from doctors following medical procedures to sales persons following the sales process, work is highly standardized and regulated. Interestingly, we have started to accept this as the norm and the definition of work and many of us spend significant amounts of time describing processes, outlining tasks and training people on how to act. Is it really such a bad thing if AI replaces many of these repetitive, standardized tasks? Wouldn’t you rather spend your time and energy that make use of your unique human capabilities? Or would you rather be a robot?
