Start with the end in mind

During a workshop at a company, the team presented the functionality that they were working on. I started to probe what the intended outcome of the effort was intended to be. All I got was high level, hand wavy answers, which bothered me. So, I started to push for more clarity and asked for quantitative KPIs that would justify the development efforts. At that point, it became clear that the team had significant differences in opinion that they were not aware of until the workshop. The challenge is of course that a team that has no clear goal or destination will have a really hard time delivering a significant contribution. How would you even determine whether you were successful? Of course, this is not true in teams at companies, but is quite common in our own lives as well. Many times, I got going on something without necessarily being clear what the goal actually looks like. Many moons ago, Stephen Covey published a book with the title “The 7 habits of highly effective people “ where one of the habits is: start with the end in mind. So, my question to you, dear reader, is whether you do?
