Continuing on the AI theme, another topic that I read about is the notion of a binary AI outcome. Either it replaces all human roles in companies and organizations and becomes smarter than all of us combined or it fails to do so and the outrageous investments and valuations (Open AI at half a TRILLION USD!!!) are basically wasted. I think that that view is completely wrong. Just like any technology that we have employed in the history of humankind, AI gives us tools. Tools with strengths and weaknesses and limitations. These tools will do certain things well and other things poorly. And it will be humans wielding the tools in service of the benefit of humanity. Initially the tools will be barely useful, but as we learn to improve the tools, these will get better and more aligned with the use cases for which we want to apply them. There is no binary outcome for AI. Just a slow expansion of the “ODD” (operational design domain) where the technology can be used effectively. That said, I still expect a similar bursting of the AI bubble as the internet bubble in 2000, but the technology will still be there and useful. And, for Pete’s sake, when that happens, let’s not throw out the baby with the bathwater, but keep investing in the technology as general purpose technologies are few and far between and lead to enormous benefit for humankind. So, as my challenge to you today: where should you start using AI today? And why didn’t you do it yesterday?
