When I worked for Intuit, our CEO often told the story about his time at Pepsi and how he was battling Coca Cola for shelf space in the supermarkets they were serving. Only to find out a few years later that people were buying more and more bottled water instead of coke. He found out he was solving the wrong problem. I have done the same many times, ranging from how I structure my workouts in the gym without seeing progress to trying to sell services to customers only to find out that the way I was selling was exactly the opposite of the pitch I should have used. In business, one of the differences between managers and leaders is often described as doing the job right versus doing the right job. Or, in other words, cutting down a tree as effectively as possible versus identifying that we are cutting down the wrong tree. So, as a reflection for today: what problem are you focusing on today? Are you certain it is the right problem to solve?
