This morning, I gave a guest lecture on software architecture to a group of 2nd year bachelor students. Several times I ran into the situation where I was using concepts that they had not yet had as part of their program. Even examples from industry that I used fell sometimes flat as the students lacked the context needed to understand the point of the examples. During the break I reflected on how much they don’t know and how much they don’t even know that they don’t know. But, this is the case for all of us. Especially when you get a bit less young, you might easily believe that you know a lot. But that is of course wrong. There is much, much more to know than what any of us will ever know. We are all operating based on a sliver of knowledge about the world around us. It’s just because we don’t know what we don’t know that we feel that we are on top of things. But we are deceiving ourselves. We simply don’t like to feel ignorant, but that is what we are. All of us. All the time. So, as my daily reflection: where are you acting as if you know what you need to know? And what if you’re wrong? What don’t you know and how would it affect you when you learned it?
