Another week, another set of interactions with people that I really enjoy talking to, but where I often wonder whether they do what they do because they want to or because they have, in some way, been forced into it. One of the sayings is that you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. This is critical to understand and organize your life around as poor choices on that front will lead to you living a life defined by the norms and values of the people around you, rather than by your own. I am as sensitive to this as the next person and my tactic has been to surround myself with people from different backgrounds and with different priorities. So, I work with researchers and academics that want to do nothing else than think and do research. I work with entrepreneurs that want to build companies and put a dent in the universe. I work with fitness enthusiasts that like challenging themselves on physical challenges. In this way, I have a smörgåsbord of choices and can pick and choose based on what I believe is best in line with my interests and passions. So, as a reflection: why do you do the things you do? Did you choose these out of a genuine interest or because of people around you influencing you?
