Going against all my principles, I decided to share one reflection about Europe. I watched a speech by Mario Draghi, one year after his famous “Draghi report”. The conclusion is that around 10% of the recommendations have been implemented and that things have become even more dire for Europe in the last year. The fact is that different regions in the world are in conflict with each other. This conflict expresses itself, of course, trade wars, cold wars and hot wars. But at the heart of it, it is a technology war. In the end, the region that wins the technology war will, by definition, win all the other ones. At this point, Europe is significantly behind the US and China in terms of technology development. The saying goes that the US innovates, China replicates and Europe regulates. But that is no longer true, if it ever was. The US and China are engaged in a technology war that will leave Europe a backwater to be ruled over by the winner of the technology war. We have many strong technology positions, industrial automation to mention only one, but we fail to bring new technologies to these areas, such as AI, to reap the benefits. I am director for Software Center with the expressed intent of helping companies change faster than what they would do without our help. And I know of many people that want nothing else but for our companies to change faster, including politicians. But we seem to have a culture, a way of organizing and a mindset that makes change unbelievably hard and painful. To make it actionable, my daily reflection to all of us is: what can you do to accelerate the pace of change in Europe so that we at least become a combatant, rather than a victim, in the ongoing technology war?
