Recently I came across a YouTube video by David Goggins with the title “you don’t want it bad enough” and I realized that there is a lot of truth in that. I want a six pack and look shredded, but I am not willing to go through the diet and training discipline that is required to achieve that state. I want to have a large pool of friends, but I am not willing to put in the hours to stay in touch with everyone who I could be friends with. I want to have tangible impact in an industrial role while maintaining my academic output, but I don’t want to work 100 hours per week and not have a life outside of work. In my experience, many people I meet have desires about what they want to do or accomplish in life, but they are unwilling to put in the work or pay the price required for them to achieve it. In the worst case, we end up in purgatory between longing and unwillingness to pay the price. So, for today’s reflection: where do you want something, but you’re not willing to put in the work? And what are you going to do about it?
