As I write this, I am at a conference where the track that I organize focuses on data- and AI driven engineering. The interesting observation is that the authors typically start from their earlier research and do what they can to make the implications of data-driven and AI-driven ways of working fit inside their earlier research. The challenge is of course that the new concepts may require a redefinition of the original concepts and the earlier work may no longer fit the current reality. This is, of course, not only the case in software, but in many aspects of life. Data- and AI-driven practices are also applied in many other areas of life, such as legal, medical, customer support and so on. It is not changing what we already do, but rather starting from a zero-based, AI-first position and figuring out what is possible. This is what I am increasingly spending my time on, but it requires me to unlearn decades of accumulated experiences and knowledge. It’s hard to learn old dogs new tricks, but with the right commitment and focus, it can be done. So, as a daily reflection, where do you need to let go of what you think you already know and instead start from a zero-based position to reinvent yourself and your work?
