This spring I did quite little traveling and spent a lot of time at home. Even if I got a lot of work done, I did realize that I missed traveling and wished that I would get invited to visit companies, give talks or for other reasons would need to get on a plane to travel. As I write this, I am in the third week of being on the road, with only the weekends at home, and I realize that I long for a few quiet weeks where I do not travel. The same is true for my job. When I worked in industry, I missed the ability to reflect and write research papers that helped me structure the chaos around me into a neat, structured model. Now that I am in academia, I miss the impact on customers, the excitement of chasing revenue goals and the “realness” of work. The funny thing is that we always want what we don’t have. Of course, I am far from the only one who experiences this and many people talk about the balance. The goldilocks model where we have just enough. Not too much and not too little. Although there is something to be said for that, I think that there is a second aspect: I now increasingly try to appreciate the situation that I am in at the moment. To avoid longing for things that I don’t have right now. So, as my reflection for today: what do you long for today? And what do you have that you could appreciate more?
