This morning I was in a meeting with other investors that all had put money into an early stage startup. The CEO of the company organizes a monthly check-in to keep investors apprised and, of course, to keep them warm for the next investment round that will be coming up in half a year or so. I realized that several of the investors were quite frustrated because the CEO was executing differently from what they would have done if they would have been in the role. And, with the end of the runway of the company looming in front of us, the sense of urgency in the meeting became even stronger than usual as we need to hit some proofpoints before we can convince everyone to be involved in another round. With the rising audio levels, I realized that the others were very much concerned with not losing their investment. My approach is different: when I have moved over the funds to a startup, I mentally say goodbye to the money and realize that there is a significantly higher chance of this being a write off than a positive return. That is just the nature of angel investing and even if I have been lucky a few times, more times than not the company didn’t go anywhere. Of course, I am far from a monk here and I have my fair share of issues that I find difficult to let go off. But attachment in all forms is a form of self-inflicted suffering that we can avoid by letting go. So, as a daily reflection: what are you attached to and find hard to let go? And what would your life look like if you were able to let go?
