One of the topics that I have observed and noodled on during recent years is the notion of feedback loops. Many companies I work with spend enormous amounts of time designing, building and testing systems before putting them in operation. SaaS companies and many Asian companies take a different approach: deploy as early as possible and build a feedback loop to the systems in the field, the customers and the market. Use that feedback loop to learn as quickly as possible and use those learnings to gain an advantage over competitors. It seems like an obvious idea, but I see so many companies getting stuck in the predeployment phase, waiting and perfecting the concept. The same is true outside of work, of course. Rather than planning the perfect workout, simply start, feel and measure what works and use the feedback loop to improve. When moving to a new place and looking to make friends, simply start saying hi to people you meet and learn from what works. So, as a reflection today, where are you stuck in planning mode?
