One of the key limitations of humans is that we tend to be paralyzed in situations where it is entirely unclear what the right course of action is. I noticed this during the last year as it comes to the role of AI in software. It was, and still is, unclear to me how far we can push the LLMs and agentic AI in terms of generating code, test cases, architectures, requirements, regulatory compliance documentations, etc. At the one end, we might see a situation where we simply give an intent (prompt) to the system and it generates a remarkably complete and complex system. Lovable shows that this works pretty well for website front ends. On the other hand, we might see that AI lets us down and that the promise was overly optimistic and not living up to expectations. The natural response would be to simply wait it out and only take action when it is clear which ways are going. But that is not how protagonists behave. So, I have been taking action. I am talking to several companies looking to figure out how they are incorporating this technology. I am reading and watching a lot of online content, focusing on people that build real systems. I am experimenting myself with different technologies. I am not saying that I have come to definite conclusions, but, if nothing else, taking action feels a lot better than waiting it out. So, as a reflection, where are you in a holding pattern, waiting for things to become clear? And what actions could you take to accelerate?
