As I am closing in on 30 years as a full professor (another 2 years), I have seen most of what academic life has to offer. I have published hundreds of papers, given thousands of presentations, organized lots of events and even helped kick off entirely new research areas. I still enjoy the intellectual challenge of research and the satisfaction that comes from creating order from chaos. I love working with multiple companies, learn about their specific ways of doing things and then generalizing from the different cases. But sometimes I wonder whether I am living up to my full potential. Could I have accomplished more by taking a different path? Have I become complacent and just rolling along the path of least resistance? And if I am, is it too late to change? Am I too old as it’s hard to teach old dogs new tricks? So, as my reflection today, to myself and you, are you living up to your full potential? And, how do you know?
