Memento Mori

Yesterday was my father’s birthday. He passed away last year after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease, but I remember him most from the time that he was in the prime of his life. The older I get, the more I realize the gifts that I received from him over the years, ranging from his hardcore calvinist life philosophy to kicking my behind when I was feeling sorry for myself and telling me to suck it up and keep going. However, I also realize that western society does what it can to pretend that we’re all going to live forever and we largely ignore our mortality. In places like Bhutan, people are encouraged to think about their own death three times per day. In my experience, incorporating the awareness of our mortality in our lives leads to more balanced priorities and less losing ourselves in battles that don’t matter that much in the long run. So, my challenge to you today is to spend a moment reflecting on the fact that also you are going to die and then decide whether the things that you are stressing about are really that important?
