This week I was traveling for several days and visited quite a few companies. I have been at these companies before, but this time there were changes everywhere. Reorganizations, people changing roles, carve outs and joint ventures, etc. My basic reaction was: darn it! It’s going to be so much work to build relationships with the new people. It’s going to be so hard to build relationships with the new organization. But, then I caught myself. Change is the only constant. Nothing ever stays the same and the only things that stay the same are the things that are dead. And who wants that? So, we need to embrace change and engage with it proactively, rather than reluctantly. As humans, we like routines. We like predictability. We like knowing what the day will look like when we wake up. Of course, it gets boring if things are too predictable, but in practice we like predictability more than novelty. And that leads to us resisting change where we can. My encouragement to myself and you today is: embrace change as it is the only thing that will be constant for the rest of your life!
