Use a mirror …

I am a volunteer gym instructor in my local gym and one of the sessions I recently introduced is a technique session where people focus on their form while conducting deadlifts, squats and other exercises. Rather than me giving them feedback on their form, I have now started to take videos on my iPad of the participants. After completing a set, one can look back at the way they conducted the exercise. In most cases, I don’t need to say anything as people immediately see what they should change and where they are doing fine. I notice that this is true in many situations in life. Rather than giving feedback, solicited or not, it is much better to provide a mirror where people get to see their own behavior and get to reflect on it. It’s not always easy to find the right mirror, but it’s a heck more effective than telling people what you think of them and their performance. So, as a suggestion, next time you are asked to provide feedback, see if you can use a mirror of some kind.
