Naval Ravikant distinguishes between status games and natural games. Status games are where we compete with others in a zero sum, win-lose situation where it is others that determine the outcome. Natural games are where we compete with ourselves, in a positive sum game where we are the judge of our own performance. The challenge is that status games may feel good, but leave you empty and lonely in the long run. Nobody likes an a-hole who is competing with you all the time and then rubs it in your face when he or she wins. Natural games are much more natural and leave you fulfilled. Working out will make you feel better and your body will tell you whether you “won”. Committing to a complex task and completing it in a way you feel good about is helping you as well as the world. The problem is that status games are addictive and because of that dangerous. Consequently, we should focus our lives on natural games. So, my question to reflect on today is what game are you playing? And who is keeping track of the score board?
