Anyone who has seen the McKinsey hype cycles knows that after the peak of inflated expectations, we sink into the trough of disillusionment. Based on the recent news articles, my sense is that we are starting to slide into that one for artificial intelligence. GPT5.0 is broadly viewed to be disappointing, more and more are commenting on the lack of real creativity in LLMs and LMMs and I have heard and read several people commenting those models being “language computers” that are incredibly powerful for certain application areas, but far from the artificial general intelligence (AGI) that many were predicting a few months ago. I see a strong parallel to the internet bubble in the late 1990s and early 2000s and I am excited! I think that individual companies are going to be hurting a lot as hundreds of billions of investment will have to be written off without much to show for it. But the infrastructure and technology that has been built and is widely available will be such a boon for humankind! So, rather than throwing out the baby with the bathwater, when we slide into the trough, make sure to think about how you can make use of all that technology at a cost of pennies on the dollar!
