This summer, I spent two weeks in the US and lived out of a 30 liter backpack that included everything I used including my running gear. It was a quite minimalist setup and I really enjoyed traveling light. However, I did notice that many of the habits that I follow at home were no longer feasible as I didn’t bring things I would need for it, the places I stayed at didn’t support or because I was busy with other things. It felt much easier to break out of my wheel of habits by leaving the context in which I spend a lot of time. I needed to change my context to force a switch in habits and now that I am home again, I notice that I am more reflective and don’t automatically fall back. So, if you feel change is needed, the first step might be to force yourself into a new context that, preferably, is very different from the normal one. Disrupting and changing your system will automatically force changes in habits!
