One of the research findings that never ceases to amaze me is that we ignore well over 99.9% of all information that reaches us through our senses. Our brains are not optimized for accurately representing the reality around us, but rather for detecting threats, ranging from sabertooth tigers to tribe members gossiping about us with the risk of us being kicked out of the tribe. Education and experience only add more filters to our perception of the world, causing us to ignore even more input simply to be able to manage complex problems by focusing on the few essential aspects. The problem is that in a world of rapid transformation, we need to unlearn our way of looking at the world and start from an as clear and unbiased view as possible. We need the Buddhist beginner’s mindset to make sure we don’t keep viewing the world through outdated lenses. So, my question to you today is: did you see it? Or did your brain ignore the important thing once again?
