As I write this, I am in the midst of the reporting workshops that we organize every six months for the research center that I lead. Not surprising, a lot of the talk in these workshops is about AI and many are sharing the AI tools that they use on a frequent basis to augment their work. And to be clear, I am paying for ChatGPT and use it on a very regular basis, so I am no different. But we now see a wide range of professional roles, ranging from software engineers to HR professionals to use these tools on a continuous basis. It made me think of the saying “we shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us”. Some are concerned about stupidification, professionals losing skills because of most of their work being automated. Others are concerned about juniors never getting a foothold in the workforce as AI is automating the simple jobs that we used to give to juniors. So, while I strongly encourage everyone to use AI tools, I think it makes sense to spend some time on deciding which tools to use so that you get shaped by these in the way that you want.
