For most of the history of life, the primary focus of every creature was to procreate. To ensure that its genes were carried into the future in a context of extreme competition. Competition for resources, for safety, for mates. Billions upon billions of creatures failed and their genes were removed from the pool. Only the most competitive, aggressive, violent ones succeeded and are part of the gene pool today. That would be you and me, my dear reader. You are the result of millions of generations of creatures that clawed their way to the top of the reproductive competition. Our society is concerned with creating safety, harmony and peace. Violence has been centralized in the police and violations of these rules are immediately punished by our legal system. It is easy to start to believe that we are a harmonious, peaceful species that wants to sing kumbaya around the campfire. However, it is a veil over our violent nature that is easily ripped off under the right conditions. Look at any war that happens and the atrocities that occur. We are more like chimpanzees than like bonobos. Rather than ignoring our violent nature, I think we need to be aware of it in order to keep it in check.
