According to some organizations doing research on researchers, I am an expert on software architecture. Also, some consider me an expert on software platforms. And on data-driven practices as well as ecosystems. Especially as we grow a bit older and more experienced in our roles, we increasingly view ourselves and are viewed by others as experts. Most of the companies that I work with have a technical career ladder where people become a senior technical expert or fellow in some topic. Here is the challenge: when your industry and field of expertise goes through significant transformation and disruption, what you have learned over all these years becomes in part or completely irrelevant. I notice this now with the emergence of AI in my field. The role of software architecture, platforms, data and ecosystems is changing fundamentally and I realize that many of my old insights, beliefs and research results are no longer relevant. I need to adopt the Zen Buddhism style beginner mindset as I refuse to become a grumpy old man who believes everything was better earlier. As it most certainly was not. So, my question to you today: which areas of your expertise are no longer relevant and should you let go of?
