Small steps lead to remarkable progress

The region where I live has several amazing long distance hiking trails organized in sections that can be hiked in a day or less. I have the ambition of completing a few of these and for the last few years, whenever there is a chance and the weather is agreeable, I have taken a day to complete another section of one the trails. The result is that I have now completed hundreds of kilometers of trail, even if every hike was only 10 to 20 kilometers. This translates to our professional lives as well: small, consistent investments over time tend to result in remarkable progress. We have a myth in our society about the overnight success achieved in one fell swoop, but that is exactly that: a myth. Virtually all progress by humankind has been the result of consistent, small investments of time, resources and energy that, over time, accumulated to something remarkable. Just keep pushing that boulder up the hill!
