During soon three decades working as a full professor, I have seen quite a few technology transformations including the introduction of software into embedded systems, the Year 2000 problem, cloud, big data and so on. Every time it led to more work for us as software engineers. This time, with the AI transformation, we are the ones disrupted. I don’t think that software engineering and engineers will disappear, but a significant part of our tasks is most certainly automated to an extent that humans will act as supervisors rather than the ones doing the work. And I believe that there will be new tasks, such as integrating ML models, LLMs and AI agents, into larger systems, that many of us were perhaps not so concerned with earlier. However, the engineers that pretend that nothing will change and that continue as usual will be disrupted and may soon be looking for a new job. Change is the only constant and you either change with it or go the way of the dinosaurs.
