For all the focus on data and AI, I can’t get over the fact that so many feedback loops that could be realized are missing in the companies that I work with. Engineering teams release new versions of their software and only track whether there are significant quality issues. Product managers fight tooth to nail to get a feature prioritized but fail to measure whether the feature indeed accomplishes the intended outcome. Senior leaders pushing reorganizations through on the promise of some benefits but never look back to see if these are realized. And whenever there is data and I or someone else dares to bring it up, especially when it clashes with the beliefs of key decision makers, there is a creative line of reasoning about how the data is wrong or misinterpreted. People hate to adjust their beliefs, even if the data stares them in the face. So, as a reminder to both me and you: look for ways to implement feedback loops that keep you anchored in reality. It’s too easy to start believing your own B.S.
