In meditation circles, there is a beautiful saying: don’t just do something, sit there! It is of course the opposite of the line that many of us have used with our kids, spouses and friends: don’t just sit there, do something! The idea is that the only way we can solve a problem or issue is by taking action. This often is not the case though. Lao Tzu famously wrote “Do you have the patience to wait until your mud settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving until the right action arises by itself?” In ancient Greek, there is the word “Kairos” which indicates the exact moment to do something. Rather than jumping in head first whenever the need strikes you, perhaps focus a bit more on finding the right time to act? Jumping into muddy waters will only make it more muddy. Wait for it!
