There is this famous line about managers versus leaders. Where managers focus on getting the work done that is right in front of them in the right way whereas leaders focus on finding the right work to do. This is of course true in our own lives too. We tend to focus on the things right in front of us, rather than asking the question whether we are doing the right work. This can, over time, easily lead to a situation where you are climbing a mountain that is not the one that you should have been climbing. You have been managing yourself rather than leading yourself. Most research on people that are close to the end of their lives shows that people regret the things they didn’t do more than the things they did do, even if those things did not work out as expected. To keep climbing the mountain that you happen to be on may cause you to end up regretting things you didn’t do. So, as a question to me and you: are you climbing the right mountain?
