In outdoor sports and adventure, such as hiking, climbing and the like, there is something called the Fun Scale. It consists of three levels of fun. Fun type I is something that is fun while you’re doing it and it’s fun afterwards. Playing a friendly basketball game with friends, for instance. Fun type II is something that is no fun while you’re doing it, but fun afterwards. Everyone who has run a marathon knows that especially the last third simply sucks. Everything hurts, you’re tired and your body is screaming at you to stop already, go home, lie on the couch and eat chips. After you finish though, and especially after you recover a bit, you feel a strong sense of accomplishment and pride. Then, there is Type III fun. This is something that is no fun while you do it nor is it fun afterwards. Everyone seeks to avoid type III fun. However, in our day to day life, we have a tendency to take on things that simply are Type III. Often out of some sense of responsibility, since we’re stuck in a rut and keep doing what we’ve always done or because we’re told to do it. My challenge to you and me today is: what is Type III fun in your life and what are you going to do to cut it out?
