Returning to something more technical, I keep being surprised with how poor most companies deal with their data. I know of companies that sell services based on raw data that leads to really weird results for their customers at times. I know of companies that have data-driven services based on data where the ownership of the data, or at least the usage rights, are not legally sorted out. I know of companies that refuse to collect data because of all the legal constraints and the fear of harming customer relations. I know of companies that collect outrageous amounts of data, at high cost, that they will never use. I know of companies that try to use data collected for quality assurance and diagnostics for training machine learning models for services. And when I confront individuals in these companies, the typical response is something along the lines “yes, we know and we should do something about it”. But they never do! So, with GDPR already a reality for years and with the Data and AI Acts going into force before too long, maybe it’s time to sort out your data and get your ducks in a row?
