There is a group of people that work on ethical AI and related ethical topics. Although I strive to be an ethical person, I struggle with this term as it implicitly implies that everyone else working with the same topic is unethical. And that I find highly objectionable as, in my experience, almost everyone that I work with has good intent and wants to do the right thing. Even (especially?) when they’re not using the “ethical” label. The second problem with using this terminology is that it tends to hamper innovation as ethical is by many of the ethics experts interpreted as keeping things as they are. The use of AI needs to result in improvements in efficiency and effectiveness to justify its existence. This means that fewer people, supported by, among others, AI agents, can do the work that earlier was done by more people. It is the definition of progress, but it is considered unethical by many in the community as it may lead to layoffs or, at a minimum, an ask to people who are no longer needed in one area of the company to take on other roles and tasks. The third is that I feel that many peddling ethics and related topics are bootleggers, in the terminology of Marc Andreesen: they are pandering the ethics topic not because of their fervor and honest belief in the importance of the topic, but because they are selling something and it gives them reputational benefits, power, funding for research activities and revenue for their company. And it’s very hard to deny them as you are automatically labelled as being against ethics. So, it’s a lose-lose situation for most of us. So, just for the fun of it, reflect on how ethical you are?
