Looking for someone else to blame?

There are many situations in life where people are looking for someone else to tell them what to do. Not because they couldn’t figure it out themselves, but because it gives them someone to blame in case things go wrong. Senior management teams getting in McKinsey or BCG for an advisory process. Companies adopting SAFe in order to go agile. Even my weekly training group in the gym loves it when I decide what they should do during the hour that I have with them. There are situations when someone else simply knows better what the best way forward is and you rely on their expertise. Also, sometimes you need external confirmation to convince others in the organization that you are right and that your proposal should be pursued. However, I have experienced too many situations where it was simply a leader or leadership team that simply didn’t dare to lead. Even if you use an external consulting house or adopt an external standard, you are still responsible. That’s why you were put in charge. Heavy is the crown, as the saying goes, but if you are in a position of leadership, it is your responsibility to lead. Don’t hide behind others and deflect blame. The buck stops here.
